Jesus Shares a Parable of Response and Responsibility (Luke 19:11-28)

Jesus tells what we call “The Parable of the Nobleman.” The nobleman needs to go away for an unspecified time to receive a kingdom. Before he leaves, he gives 10 of his servants each a sum of money to invest for him. Somewhere along the process, subjects of his kingdom send notice to him that they will not receive him as their king. The nobleman leaves, and after some time returns. He calls his servants and has them each give a report of what they had accomplished with his money. Some servants excel and report very high earnings, for which the nobleman rewards them with significant promotions. Another servant simply hid the money in lazy fashion and returned the same amount back to his master. The nobleman scolds the servant and gives the existing money to one of the obedient high-achievers. Once the nobleman deals with the servants, he brings the rebellious citizens before him and has them executed.

As the parable suggests, you are in one of two groups regarding your relationship with God: You are either (1) an inside servant (a believer), or (2) an outside rejector.  God will judge both. If you are an inside servant, you are either (1) obeying God by doing what He has assigned you to do, or you are (2) disobediently ignoring what your Master has assigned (and either way, you will give an account). Which group are you in? Which focus do you have?

Jesus Illustrates Your Two After-Death Possibilities (Luke 16:19-31)

Jesus Illustrates Your Two After-Death Possibilities (Luke 16:19-31)

Jesus compares two men of very contrasting living conditions. One man is very rich and lives lavishly in luxury. The other man, a very poor man named Lazarus, has nothing – not even his health. Both men die, but end up in two entirely opposite ends. The rich man finds himself in Hades in incredible pain, and Lazarus is in comfort next to Abraham. Jesus focuses primarily on the rich man and his urgent pleas in the midst of his suffering. Jesus also highlights the extreme importance of responding to the Word of God in this life. What will YOU wake up to when you die?
