Timeline of Truth:  Othniel, Faithful Foreigner  (Judges 3:7-11)
Israel continues in “the evil” in departing from God’s covenant and serving other, false gods. God acts in holy indignation, and “sells” Israel into the hands of an outside invader for eight years. The oppression is real, and Israel cries out to God in anguish. God, in His mercy, sends the first deliverer (in the book of Judges) – Othniel – to defeat the invaders. sending an outside conqueror to oppress Israel. We examine this “best” of deliverers (judges) found in this book, make some interesting observations about his connection to Israel, and draw two key lessons.

Timeline of Truth: Military Failure: Partial Obedience Is Disobedience (Judges 1:1 – 2:5)
With this lesson, we jump right into the first part of the two-part introduction. Chapter 1 of Judges records the failure of the tribes of Israel to conquer the land as commanded by God. They fail to drive out the enemy, dwell with the enemy, and some are even driven out by the enemy. God addresses this disobedience in 2:1-5, and indicates that He is withdrawing His special support of them. The remaining enemy among the children of Israel will be a thorn in their sides, and the false gods of these people will become a snare to them. Thus begins the Book of Judges and the fast decline of a nation who refuses to obey God.

Learn From Their [Lousy] Examples (1 Corinthians 10:1-12)

Monday, April 30th, 2012

We back up and look at the context of 1 Corinthians 10:13. We see that the Israelites had five amazing supernatural experiences in common, and yet “with most of them God was not well-pleased.”

What did they do wrong? God gives us five areas in which they sinned, and by which we can learn from their failures.
