Jesus Reinforces the Purpose of the Temple (Luke 19:45-48)

As Jesus approaches His time of betrayal and crucifixion in Jerusalem, He does not sit idly by or hide in the shadows. Jesus continues on His mission to relay the truth of God as the Son of God. For a second time, Jesus purges the temple of those playing the game of religion. Why? First, by selling in the temple area, these sellers and buyers are violating the purpose of the temple – to be a house of prayer to all nations. The temple was intended by God as a place where people from any background could come and meet with the true God. Instead, those that should be encouraging the evangelism of the nations had actually displaced that purpose altogether. Second, these sellers and buyers had made it a “den of thieves.” Now no doubt the trading of money and sacrificial items was a means to cheat those arriving. But the quote from the Old Testament indicates more. The buyers and sellers were going through the motions of religion while rejecting the purpose of it. They were indeed fakers all. Jesus clearly tells them that their fake religion is not at all what God demands. What of your life? Are you, as a believer, using God’s temple (your body – 1 Cor 6:19-20) to reach out to unbelievers? Further, are you truly worshiping God and allowing Him to make you holy, or are you just going through the motions?
