Timeline of Truth: Naomi Guides Ruth to Approach Boaz (Ruth 3:1-5)

Harvest season is over. Boaz had continued to provide for and protect Ruth. Boaz takes no further action as a potential kinsman-redeemer (and we give several suggestions as to why both Boaz and Naomi hesitate). We look at how Naomi takes action, directing Ruth to approach Boaz with a marriage proposal based upon his kinsman-redeemer relationship. We also discuss five key responsibilities of a kinsman-redeemer.

What Are Apostles, and Do We Have Apostles Today? (Acts 1:12-26+)

Because we have left the Book of Luke and are now in Acts, the position of Apostle becomes very important and very prevalent. We need to understand what apostles are, and whether or not they exist today. Timeline of Truth: Ruth Returns from Gleaning, and Naomi Responds (Ruth 2:18-23)

When Naomi sees the amount of grain Ruth brings home, she is amazed. When Ruth informs her who the owner of the field is that Ruth has been gleaning in, she is elated. Naomi instructs her 20-something daughter-in-law to follow the directions of Boaz for her protection and maximum provision, and possibly has other, longer-term ideas in mind. Naomi begins to see the work of God amid her sufferings as He acts through the loyal, loving efforts of Ruth.

Timeline of Truth: Boaz Rewards Ruth’s Choices (Ruth 2:4-17)

Ruth has hit the ground running, seeking to glean after the harvesters as allowed by the Law in order to provide for her mother-in-law and herself. God providentially brings her to the field of Boaz. Boaz, a righteous man in a very ungodly time, takes steps to protect and provide for her while she gleans. God rewards Ruth for her obedience and sacrifice through this righteous man in the midst of her very hard work. God teaches us eight lessons of righteous conduct from both Boaz and Ruth.

The Apostles Try to Obey Prophecy by Replacing Judas #1 – Timeline (Acts 1:12-26)

Jesus has ascended. The apostles return to Jerusalem to wait as directed. Peter attempts to fulfill prophecy by orchestrating the selection of a replacement for Judas, the apostle who betrayed Jesus, and who took his own life. In this study, we work through the chronology of this event. In the next week or two, we will examine some of the necessary questions more closely. Prophecy is certain; our trying to fulfill it is not.

Timeline of Truth: Ruth Seeks to Provide, and God Works Out the Details (Ruth 2:1-3)

As the widowed daughter-in-law who committed herself to her widowed mother-in-law, Ruth takes the initiative to provide. She seeks and receives Naomi’s approval to go and glean in the fields, as the Law provided for the poor and stranger. Ruth’s righteous choices are aided by God’s working in the background long before.

The Spectacle of Jesus’ Ascension and the Promise of His Return (Acts 1:9-11)

When Jesus finished talking to the 11 apostles on Mt Olivet, He was lifted up into the sky and disappeared out of their sight. The apostles just stand and stare, until they are spoken to by two angels, who ask them why they stand and stare. The angels then issue a promise that Jesus will come back in the same way, bodily and visibly – a truth that is core to Christian belief.

Timeline of Truth: Naomi Enters Bethlehem (with Ruth) Greeted but Grieving (Ruth 1:19-22)

Naomi arrives home, to Bethlehem, with Ruth. She is recognized, and her arrival causes quite a commotion. Being called by her name (which means “pleasant” or “lovely”), Naomi bursts out in grief, instructing people to call her Mara (“bitter”) instead, because of the terrible things that have happened to her. Key in Naomi’s response is that she recognizes that God is in control of all circumstances – bad and good. By acknowledging God’s hand in tragedy, she also acknowledges her belief and hope in God to bring her good.

Jesus Gives His Final Words to His Apostles: BE WITNESSES (Acts 1:8)

In contrast to what Jesus told His apostles they were NOT to focus on (times or seasons), He does tell them what they ARE to be focusing on. Once they receive the Promise of the Father, the Holy Spirit, they will be enabled or empowered to be witnesses of Jesus. This witnessing is to take place in Jerusalem, in Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. Jesus’ direction gives five indications concerning our witnessing. We have the Power to witness, the places to witness, and the prescription for witnessing.
