Timeline of Truth – Division East of Jordan, Caleb’s Inheritance and Judah and Its Cities (Joshua 13:7-15:63)
Israel is coming to the completion of their conquest of the land.  Joshua has been charged by God to begin to divide the land.  Nine and a half tribe have been waiting for God to fulfill His promise to Abraham and starting with Judah, Israel begins to receive their inheritance.  One character stands out for his faithfulness to God, and he is especially blessed as he receives his land.

Jesus Highlights the Failure of Many to Glorify God (Luke 17:11-19)

Jesus Highlights the Failure of Many to Glorify God (Luke 17:11-19)

Jesus comes to 10 leprous men who beg Him to have mercy on them. Jesus sends them to the priests, as the law would require. On their way, the 10 are cleansed and healed. One, a Samaritan, stops in his tracks, loudly glorifies God with his voice, returns to Jesus, and falls at Jesus’ feet in thankfulness. Jesus asks a few pointed questions that highlight the missing 9. Where are they, and why are they not doing what this healed Samaritan is doing? If we are saved, we must understand that our sin is much more repulsive to God than leprosy, and His salvation is much more miraculous. Our one, rightful response is to live focused on God and glorify Him in our focus, our attitudes and thoughts, our words, and our actions. Jesus saved you so that you can glorify Him. WHERE ARE YOU?

Jesus Helps Us See True Lordship and Eager Service (Luke 17:7-10)

Jesus Helps Us See True Lordship and Eager Service (Luke 17:7-10)

Jesus explains how priority and quantity both relate to true Lordship. Jesus asks two hard-hitting rhetorical questions. The first question reveals one’s true lord based on the priority given the Lord. The second question reveals our true or false view of Lordship based upon our attitude towards our service, and how we measure it. Do we serve eagerly or perform the minimum?

Timeline of Truth: Israel Defends the Gibeonites and Defeats a Military Alliance (Joshua 10:1-27)
When the Gibeonites are threatened by an alliance of five kings, they turn to Joshua to defend them.  Joshua must trust that the Lord is with him and will give him the victory.  Likewise, when we face challenges in our lives, we can be assured that God is with us and that He gives us all we need to be successful.

Jesus Speaks of Focus, Forgiveness, and Faith (Luke 17:3-6)

Jesus Speaks of Focus, Forgiveness, and Faith (Luke 17:3-6)

Jesus commands us to watch our worse enemy – SELF. Jesus then commands us to rebuke those that sin against us, and to forgive those that repent. When the apostles hear this, they express in dismay their need for more faith (belief) before they could comply with these commands. Jesus, by illustration, explains that faith is not a matter of quantity but of obedience.

Timeline of Truth: Joshua Makes a Treaty with the Gibeonites (Joshua 9:1-27)
Israel is approached with an offer of a treaty, but all is not what it seems.  Joshua has the opportunity to ask the Lord what they should do, but he did not.  A rash decision by Israel’s leaders led to the people not being able to do what God commanded.  God wants us to seek out His will through His word, that we may make the right decisions.

The Danger of Being a Spiritual Detriment to Others (Luke 17:1-2)

The Danger of Being a Spiritual Detriment to Others (Luke 17:1-2)

Jesus speaks of scandal: Those that scandilize and the act of scandalizing. In this study, we examine two verses and the meaning of the word used in both verses: skandalon. Jesus says that temptations will come that will attempt to set back, deceive, and trap the “little ones.” Jesus assures His disciples that God knows and God tracks those that wrongly impede children through their influence and power. Drowning by means of having a millstone around one’s neck is preferred over the judgment that those who scandalize children will receive. We will also examine five ways we might scandalize others. Beware, set your mind to help not hurt, and be comforted.

Jesus Illustrates Your Two After-Death Possibilities (Luke 16:19-31)

Jesus Illustrates Your Two After-Death Possibilities (Luke 16:19-31)

Jesus compares two men of very contrasting living conditions. One man is very rich and lives lavishly in luxury. The other man, a very poor man named Lazarus, has nothing – not even his health. Both men die, but end up in two entirely opposite ends. The rich man finds himself in Hades in incredible pain, and Lazarus is in comfort next to Abraham. Jesus focuses primarily on the rich man and his urgent pleas in the midst of his suffering. Jesus also highlights the extreme importance of responding to the Word of God in this life. What will YOU wake up to when you die?
