Jesus Calls Us to Real Discipleship – Part 1 (Luke 14:25-35)

Wednesday, January 24th, 2018

In this passage, Jesus shifts beyond responding to the invitation. He points not to one’s position, but to our practice. He speaks not in terms of belief but behavior. He addresses what it takes to truly follow Him – to be a disciple. Jesus reveals three requirements that one must have to truly be living as a disciple. As we begin, we examine what the full meaning of a “disciple” is. We then list these three requirements, and first look at 3 key observations about all three that help us understand what Jesus is saying. Then we look at the first requirement: Hating those closest to us (!).

Jesus Emphasizes Our Need to Accept His Invitation (Luke 14:15-24)

Wednesday, January 24th, 2018

While still at the meal He was invited to (Luke 14:1-14), one attendee near Jesus says to Him, “Blessed [is] he who shall eat bread in the kingdom of God!”  Instead of automatically affirming the idea, Jesus highlights the idea that everyone won’t be eating bread in the kingdom. Only those who respond to God’s invitation will be present. Many have rejected God’s invitation already. Have you received God’s invitation?
