God Wants ALL of ME:  My BODY (Romans 12:1)

Christianity is much more than just participating in external rituals like attending church services or giving money to God’s work. Though these practices are good, God clearly communicates that He wants ALL of you. He wants each believer to yield his or her body to God as worship to Him. This is the first of a four-part series on Romans 12.

Timeline of Truth: Gideon, the Fearful, Faulty Judge – The Calling of Gideon (Judges 6:1-40)

Timeline of Truth:  Gideon, the Fearful, Faulty Judge – The Calling of Gideon (Judges 6:1-40)
We begin the first of four lessons related to a well-known deliverer:  Gideon. Israel continues “the sin” by serving other gods. God delivers them into enemy hands again, this time, into the hands of the Midianites. Israel cries out to God because of the oppression by the enemy. God graciously raises up another “fighting rescuer,” Gideon. In this chapter of the Bible, we see God’s patient process of raising up a leader through a gradual process. God labels Gideon by the outcome he can be through God’s help: “Might man of valor.”

Timeline of Truth: Barak, Reluctant Leader (Judges 4:1-24)

Timeline of Truth:  Barak, Reluctant Leader (Judges 4:1-24)
This study of Judges 4 introduces us to an unusual figure, Deborah the prophetess, and her prompting of God’s deliverer, Barak. Barak seemingly was refusing God’s direction to assemble an army. God used Deborah to encourage Barak to obey God, and to defeat completely the occupying enemy army. Because of Barak’s reluctance, God tells Barak that he will lose the glory normally enjoyed by such a defeat. A woman will receive the glory, and that’s exactly what happened.

Jesus Reinforces the Purpose of the Temple (Luke 19:45-48)

Jesus Reinforces the Purpose of the Temple (Luke 19:45-48)

As Jesus approaches His time of betrayal and crucifixion in Jerusalem, He does not sit idly by or hide in the shadows. Jesus continues on His mission to relay the truth of God as the Son of God. For a second time, Jesus purges the temple of those playing the game of religion. Why? First, by selling in the temple area, these sellers and buyers are violating the purpose of the temple – to be a house of prayer to all nations. The temple was intended by God as a place where people from any background could come and meet with the true God. Instead, those that should be encouraging the evangelism of the nations had actually displaced that purpose altogether. Second, these sellers and buyers had made it a “den of thieves.” Now no doubt the trading of money and sacrificial items was a means to cheat those arriving. But the quote from the Old Testament indicates more. The buyers and sellers were going through the motions of religion while rejecting the purpose of it. They were indeed fakers all. Jesus clearly tells them that their fake religion is not at all what God demands. What of your life? Are you, as a believer, using God’s temple (your body – 1 Cor 6:19-20) to reach out to unbelievers? Further, are you truly worshiping God and allowing Him to make you holy, or are you just going through the motions?

Timeline of Truth: Military Failure: Partial Obedience Is Disobedience (Judges 1:1-2:5)

Timeline of Truth: Military Failure: Partial Obedience Is Disobedience (Judges 1:1 – 2:5)
With this lesson, we jump right into the first part of the two-part introduction. Chapter 1 of Judges records the failure of the tribes of Israel to conquer the land as commanded by God. They fail to drive out the enemy, dwell with the enemy, and some are even driven out by the enemy. God addresses this disobedience in 2:1-5, and indicates that He is withdrawing His special support of them. The remaining enemy among the children of Israel will be a thorn in their sides, and the false gods of these people will become a snare to them. Thus begins the Book of Judges and the fast decline of a nation who refuses to obey God.

Timeline of Truth: Israel Reaffirms the Covenant (Joshua 24:1-33)
Joshua presents the most important choice that anyone must make: Serve God or something else. Joshua shows the nation that the only reasonable choice is to serve God and makes his commitment to serve God himself. We are encouraged to echo Joshua’s response, “as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” You are serving God or you are serving something that replaces God. What have you chosen?
