Timeline of Truth: Boaz Goes to the Gate to Secure Ruth’s Future (Ruth 4:1-6)

Monday, November 11th, 2019

Boaz promptly keeps his promise to pursue a Biblical solution for Ruth. He gets to the city gate early to be able to meet the closer relative. He gathers the necessary witnesses and gets down to business. He truly works to bring the uncertain future of Ruth to a certain end. Like Boaz, when we know what God wants us to do, we need to do it promptly.

Timeline of Truth: Spiritual Failure: God Sends Trouble on God-Forsakers (Judges 2:6 – 3:6)

Timeline of Truth:  Spiritual Failure: God Sends Trouble on God-Forsakers  (Judges 2:6 – 3:6)
Chapter 2 of Judges looks deeper into the actions (or inactions) of Israel’s military failures of Chapter 1. We see the full-blown impact of disobedience and the eternity-impacting downward spiral that sin brings. Because Israel forsakes God and His covenant and plunges themselves deep into worshipping the gods of the nations they are around, God brings oppressors that make the lives of the nation of Israel miserable. Do they come back to God? No. They run further into sin and away from God. Does God wholly abandon them? No. In the midst of their discipline and punishment, God continues to show grace by raising up judges – limited and often very broken leaders – to free them from their oppressors for a time, and to keep Israel on course for His future promises.

Timeline of Truth: Military Failure: Partial Obedience Is Disobedience (Judges 1:1-2:5)

Timeline of Truth: Military Failure: Partial Obedience Is Disobedience (Judges 1:1 – 2:5)
With this lesson, we jump right into the first part of the two-part introduction. Chapter 1 of Judges records the failure of the tribes of Israel to conquer the land as commanded by God. They fail to drive out the enemy, dwell with the enemy, and some are even driven out by the enemy. God addresses this disobedience in 2:1-5, and indicates that He is withdrawing His special support of them. The remaining enemy among the children of Israel will be a thorn in their sides, and the false gods of these people will become a snare to them. Thus begins the Book of Judges and the fast decline of a nation who refuses to obey God.

Timeline of Truth: Israel Reaffirms the Covenant (Joshua 24:1-33)
Joshua presents the most important choice that anyone must make: Serve God or something else. Joshua shows the nation that the only reasonable choice is to serve God and makes his commitment to serve God himself. We are encouraged to echo Joshua’s response, “as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” You are serving God or you are serving something that replaces God. What have you chosen?

Thankfully a small group of representatives from the western tribes talk it out and find out the truth of the other altar and prevent unnecessary bloodshed.

Jesus Confirms Our Need to Humbly Admit Our Sinfulness (Luke 18:9-14)

Jesus Confirms Our Need to Humbly Admit Our Sinfulness (Luke 18:9-14)

Jesus addresses those who had come to trust in their own righteousness by telling the parable of a Pharisee and a tax collector praying at the temple.  The Pharisee prays, listing his righteous resume’. In stark contrast, the tax collector can only ask for mercy and acknowledge his sinfulness. Only one went away pronounced righteous, and it was not the self-righteous Pharisee. How can this be? What must we learn?
