Timeline of Truth: Boaz Goes to the Gate to Secure Ruth’s Future (Ruth 4:1-6)

Monday, November 11th, 2019

Boaz promptly keeps his promise to pursue a Biblical solution for Ruth. He gets to the city gate early to be able to meet the closer relative. He gathers the necessary witnesses and gets down to business. He truly works to bring the uncertain future of Ruth to a certain end. Like Boaz, when we know what God wants us to do, we need to do it promptly.

Because we have left the Book of Luke and are now in Acts, the position of Apostle becomes very important and very prevalent. We need to understand what apostles are, and whether or not they exist today. Answering the first question in the title, we look at 12 characteristics true of apostles as they are presented in the New Testament.

The Spectacle of Jesus’ Ascension and the Promise of His Return (Acts 1:9-11)

Sunday, October 6th, 2019

When Jesus finished talking to the 11 apostles on Mt Olivet, He was lifted up into the sky and disappeared out of their sight. The apostles just stand and stare, until they are spoken to by two angels, who ask them why they stand and stare. The angels then issue a promise that Jesus will come back in the same way, bodily and visibly – a truth that is core to Christian belief.

Jesus Gives His Final Words to His Apostles: BE WITNESSES (Acts 1:8)

Tuesday, October 1st, 2019

In contrast to what Jesus told His apostles they were NOT to focus on (times or seasons), He does tell them what they ARE to be focusing on. Once they receive the Promise of the Father, the Holy Spirit, they will be enabled or empowered to be witnesses of Jesus. This witnessing is to take place in Jerusalem, in Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. Jesus’ direction gives five indications concerning our witnessing. We have the Power to witness, the places to witness, and the prescription for witnessing.

Jesus Gives His Final Words to His Apostles: NOT YOURS (Acts 1:6-7)

Sunday, September 22nd, 2019

God has not given us access to all information. He has given us the information we need for life and godliness. In Acts 1:6, the apostles ask if Jesus is going to restore the kingdom to Israel. Jesus replies by saying that information regarding times and seasons is something God has not given to us. Jesus’ response also teaches us about the kingdom that will certainly be restored to Israel.

Timeline of Truth: Spiritual Failure: God Sends Trouble on God-Forsakers (Judges 2:6 – 3:6)

Timeline of Truth:  Spiritual Failure: God Sends Trouble on God-Forsakers  (Judges 2:6 – 3:6)
Chapter 2 of Judges looks deeper into the actions (or inactions) of Israel’s military failures of Chapter 1. We see the full-blown impact of disobedience and the eternity-impacting downward spiral that sin brings. Because Israel forsakes God and His covenant and plunges themselves deep into worshipping the gods of the nations they are around, God brings oppressors that make the lives of the nation of Israel miserable. Do they come back to God? No. They run further into sin and away from God. Does God wholly abandon them? No. In the midst of their discipline and punishment, God continues to show grace by raising up judges – limited and often very broken leaders – to free them from their oppressors for a time, and to keep Israel on course for His future promises.

Timeline of Truth: Military Failure: Partial Obedience Is Disobedience (Judges 1:1-2:5)

Timeline of Truth: Military Failure: Partial Obedience Is Disobedience (Judges 1:1 – 2:5)
With this lesson, we jump right into the first part of the two-part introduction. Chapter 1 of Judges records the failure of the tribes of Israel to conquer the land as commanded by God. They fail to drive out the enemy, dwell with the enemy, and some are even driven out by the enemy. God addresses this disobedience in 2:1-5, and indicates that He is withdrawing His special support of them. The remaining enemy among the children of Israel will be a thorn in their sides, and the false gods of these people will become a snare to them. Thus begins the Book of Judges and the fast decline of a nation who refuses to obey God.

Timeline of Truth: Introduction to the Book of Judges
With this lesson, we begin our study in one of the most honest and discouraging books of the Bible: Judges. God does not sugarcoat the sins of people or of nations. As the 7th book of the Bible, Judges serves to remind us of the downhill spiral of any people who reject God and His design for them. Though these events take place prior to the kings of Israel (beginning with Saul), the truths we will uncover will connect with the very time in which we live. We will give a brief overview of the book’s historical setting and purpose, and see that God alone is the Hero of the book, and rescues on the basis of His grace. [NOTE: The recording is not the best due to some technical issues. Sorry.]

Timeline of Truth: Israel Reaffirms the Covenant (Joshua 24:1-33)

Timeline of Truth: Israel Reaffirms the Covenant (Joshua 24:1-33)
Joshua presents the most important choice that anyone must make: Serve God or something else. Joshua shows the nation that the only reasonable choice is to serve God and makes his commitment to serve God himself. We are encouraged to echo Joshua’s response, “as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” You are serving God or you are serving something that replaces God. What have you chosen?
