Jesus Schools a Rich Man on His True Sinfulness (Luke 18:18-27)

Riches cannot buy heaven, but they can keep you from it. Jesus is approached by a young ruler who is very rich, and very concerned about his eternal destiny.  He asks Jesus what he can do to inherit eternal life. Jesus answers the rich man based upon the man’s question, listing 5 of the 10 commandments. The rich man affirms his lifelong compliance with these 5 commandments. Jesus then instructs him to sell all that he has and give the proceeds to the poor. Do we have to give everything away to gain eternity? No. Jesus was seeking to help this young man see that nothing he was, he had, or could do would work to secure his eternal future. The law was given to show us our helpless, sinful state. Regardless of our status – rich or poor, educated or not, tall or short, talented or accomplish or having nothing to show – anything – is useless to us. Our only hope is God’s salvation, and nothing we are, we have, or that we can do can save us. We can only believe in God’s loving Sin Bearer – Jesus. What are you trusting in to get yourself into the kingdom of God? There is only one way, and that is Jesus’ payment for your sins.

Jesus Corrects the Disciples’ View of Children (Luke 18:15-17)

Jesus Corrects the Disciples’ View of Children (Luke 18:15-17)

Much of the world now sees children as a bother – a distraction from our passions and pursuits.  Even the Church is deeply immersed in this viewpoint. The disciples acted on the basis of this view. Jesus – greatly troubled by this – indicates that this anti-child view is 180 degrees off from what is true. Children are to be allowed and encouraged participate, and all people can only enter the kingdom if they become as little children. Children are not a distraction from the Gospel – they are the very illustration of what is required to embrace the Gospel. This has clear implications regarding the need for salvation and the simplicity of salvation. Have you become as a little child, simply believing the truth of our Sin-bearer, Jesus?

Jesus Confirms Our Need to Humbly Admit Our Sinfulness (Luke 18:9-14)

Jesus Confirms Our Need to Humbly Admit Our Sinfulness (Luke 18:9-14)

Jesus addresses those who had come to trust in their own righteousness by telling the parable of a Pharisee and a tax collector praying at the temple.  The Pharisee prays, listing his righteous resume’. In stark contrast, the tax collector can only ask for mercy and acknowledge his sinfulness. Only one went away pronounced righteous, and it was not the self-righteous Pharisee. How can this be? What must we learn?
