Jesus Corrects the Disciples’ View of Children (Luke 18:15-17)

Jesus Corrects the Disciples’ View of Children (Luke 18:15-17)

Much of the world now sees children as a bother – a distraction from our passions and pursuits.  Even the Church is deeply immersed in this viewpoint. The disciples acted on the basis of this view. Jesus – greatly troubled by this – indicates that this anti-child view is 180 degrees off from what is true. Children are to be allowed and encouraged participate, and all people can only enter the kingdom if they become as little children. Children are not a distraction from the Gospel – they are the very illustration of what is required to embrace the Gospel. This has clear implications regarding the need for salvation and the simplicity of salvation. Have you become as a little child, simply believing the truth of our Sin-bearer, Jesus?

God Addresses a Woman’s Honor and Her Focus (1 Timothy 5:1-16)

God Addresses a Woman’s Honor and Her Focus (1 Timothy 5:1-16)

Womanhood is something very special to God. 1 Timothy 5:1-16 could be said to the “Proverbs 31” of the New Testament. God gives instructions on how women are to be honored as mothers. He gives almost rapid-fire commands on caring for aged women, both who have family and those who do not. Some are to be taken “into the number” as supported staff by the church. Paul gives a list of qualifiers that a woman is to meet which includes age and activity. Those too young are to marry, bear children, and manage the home. God’s most eternal plans for a woman center around her home-based ministry.

The Danger of Being a Spiritual Detriment to Others (Luke 17:1-2)

The Danger of Being a Spiritual Detriment to Others (Luke 17:1-2)

Jesus speaks of scandal: Those that scandilize and the act of scandalizing. In this study, we examine two verses and the meaning of the word used in both verses: skandalon. Jesus says that temptations will come that will attempt to set back, deceive, and trap the “little ones.” Jesus assures His disciples that God knows and God tracks those that wrongly impede children through their influence and power. Drowning by means of having a millstone around one’s neck is preferred over the judgment that those who scandalize children will receive. We will also examine five ways we might scandalize others. Beware, set your mind to help not hurt, and be comforted.

Jesus Addresses the Damage of Divorce (Luke 16:18)

Jesus is in the middle of teaching on money, and then brings up – divorce? His point is that if one is not faithful in the realm of money, one will certainly not be faithful in the realm of moralityIn this study, we take a brief and precise look at what Jesus said in Luke 16:18 about divorce. We first review what the Bible teaches on marriage, as one cannot understand what the Bible says about divorce without first understanding marriage. We then look at the impact of divorce on marriage, and then we examine the two situations where the Bible appears to allow for divorce. To understand God’s hatred of divorce, understand God’s design for marriage.

In this study, we look at the first key individual mentioned in this story or account. He is often called “The Prodigal Son.” We see this younger son’s poor choices and his progressive spiral downward while living the wild, wasteful life when he eventually hits bottom. We look at his 8 downward steps and then draw 9 helpful lessons from his life. Does his life in any way reflect your life? If so, what would God have you do to make corrections?

God Designs Marriage: 13 Principles from Genesis (Genesis 1-3)

Thursday, February 20th, 2014

Even in conservative Christian circles, people miss what God clearly establishes regarding marriage in the first three chapters of Genesis. These truths remain unchanged throughout the Bible. Will the Bible be your authority regarding the very basis of marriage, gender, children, society, and the Church?

Mark 10:2-9 The Pharisees came and asked Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” testing Him. 3 And He answered and said to them, “What did Moses command you?” 4 They said, “Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce, and to dismiss her.” 5 And Jesus answered and said to them, “Because of the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept. 6 “But from the beginning of the creation, God `made them male and female.’ 7 `For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, 8 `and the two shall become one flesh’; so then they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9 “Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”
