Timeline of Truth: Jonathan, the Compromising Levite: Danites and Jonathan (Judges 18:1-31)

Tuesday, March 19th, 2019

Judges 18 continues the story of the Levite and Micah. This situation illustrates how, once you make sinful choices, it becomes easier and easier to continue to disobey.  We also find out the identity of the mysterious Levite: Jonathan, the grandson of Moses.  Spirituality is not inherited. It must be taught, and embraced. We are taught in this lesson that we must be diligent and committed to doing what is right.  It is too easy to abandon the things of God and to do what is right in our own eyes.

Timeline of Truth: The Downfall of Gideon, the Faulty Judge (Judges 8:13-34)

Timeline of Truth:  The Downfall of Gideon, the Faulty Judge (Judges 8:13-34)
God miraculously secures victory for Gideon. Gideon allows the credit to go to himself rather than to God and reflects a prideful embrace in an unofficial kingship. In just a brief number of verses (8:13-34), we trace the many evidences that Gideon glories in himself and his newly found (but God-given) success. His actions and his influence lead Israel away from God, encourage idolatry, and set the stage for worse things to come. The truth Gideon did not embrace: Spiritual success requires humble recognition of God and the accurate assessment of oneself.

Timeline of Truth: God Deals with Disobedience (Joshua 7:1-26)
God takes sin very seriously. When Israel disobeys God’s command, the consequences are severe. Joshua leads the people to make thing right and to sanctify themselves before God. As His children, we need to understand how serious sin is and we need to forsake it and obey God.

MONEY MATTERS: Jesus Confronts the Money-Loving Pharisees (Luke 16:14-18)

Jesus confronts the money-loving religious leaders that have been hearing Him speak and sneering at His teaching. Jesus points out their ungodly habit of trying to justify their ungodly money-loving attitudes and actions. He lets them know that what man considers important actually repulses God. Money often replaces God in people’s lives. Jesus also illustrates that when one refuses to follow God in one area, that person is likely to refuse to follow God in all areas, including morality and marriage. Are you like the money-loving Pharisees that put money first?

Jesus Tells the Parable of a Father and His Two Sons #1 (Luke 15:11-16)

Tuesday, February 13th, 2018

Sin is like gravity. You can ignore what God says about it, but it has the same effects, consequences, and result on you anyway, no matter where you go. In this study, we look at the first key individual mentioned in this story or account. He is often called “The Prodigal Son.” We see this younger son’s poor choices and his progressive spiral downward while living the wild, wasteful life when he eventually hits bottom. We look at his 8 downward steps and then draw 9 helpful lessons from his life. Does his life in any way reflect your life? If so, what would God have you do to make corrections?
