Jesus Seeks a Sinful Man that Seeks After Him (Luke 19-10)

You may have heard of the account of Zacchaeus as a child. This man was hated by his countrymen for at least two reasons. First, he collected taxes for the occupying Roman government. He was a traitor in the eyes of those around him. Second, the way he gained his great wealth was by overcharging his countrymen when collecting taxes. They hated him as a thief. This man, short in stature, knew of his great sinfulness and sought to catch a glimpse of Jesus by climbing a tree. Jesus not only saw this man but went to his house. Zacchaeus believed and was changed forever. He made it right with everyone he cheated and gave his remaining money to the poor. God can save the worst of sinners, and thereby change worst of sinners.

MONEY MATTERS: Jesus Commands Us to Use Our Money for Eternal Impact (Luke 16:1-9)

Jesus tells a rather strange story of a man who worked for a rich guy as a manager. He was a “steward” who was in charge of the financial affairs of this rich man. However, he had loosely handled the finances of his boss and was “called in on the carpet.” His boss basically told him to tie things up because he was going to terminate his employment. He was no longer trustworthy. The soon-to-be-unemployed steward worried for a bit, and then set out on a plan to make friends on the outside with the authority he still held with his boss’s money. It worked, and his boss was impressed at his strategy. Jesus then compares that steward with us. Our money really belongs to God. And we are to use “our” money to make friends in eternity. How can that happen? Our study will answer that question.

On the Giving of Gifts at Christmas: Is There a Basis for Doing So?

Sunday, December 17th, 2017

Have you ever thought about this question: Why DO we give gifts at Christmas? Many try to offer reasons from Scripture, but have you thought about the truthfulness of those reasons? Some say that we give gifts to one another because the wise men gave gifts to Jesus. Others offer the argument that we do so because God gave His gift – Jesus – to us. Some figure that we are giving to one another to fill needs that we might have. Others believe we somehow are earning eternal rewards when we load our loved ones up with gifts. Some may even think that it encourages people to love God when we bury others with Christmas gifts. What would be the Biblical validity of these reasons? We’ll look at each in this study.
