Timeline of Truth: Samson, the Selfish Judge – The Victory of Samson (Judges 15:1-20)

Tuesday, February 12th, 2019

We now enter the third chapter in Judges devoted to Samson. Here God uses Samson to begin to work against the Philistines, who are occupying Israel’s land and oppressing Israel’s people. Through an escalating series of events where Samson is wrongly treated, Samson burns the crops, vineyards, and trees of the Philistines by an ingenious method. The Philistines respond by killing Samson’s wife and father-in-law. Samson kills those responsible (and more), inciting the wrath of the Philistine army. The army moves in to capture Samson, aided by the men of Judah. God uses Samson and his feeble displays of faith, in spite of his selfish motives, to fend off Philistine control. Are we hurting or helping the work of God and the people of God?

God Wants ALL of ME:  How It LOOKS in ACTION (Romans 12:9-21)

After God describes His will for us in Romans 12:1-8, wanting our bodiesas living sacrifices, renewing our minds to replace worldly thinking, andgifting us to serve one another, He uses the rest of the chapter to paint apicture to show us how this looks in action. God describes our attitudes, actions, and relationships as they look when we are yielding our bodies, our minds, and our time to Him. This is the last of a four-part series on Romans 12.

God Wants ALL of ME:  My BODY (Romans 12:1)

Christianity is much more than just participating in external rituals like attending church services or giving money to God’s work. Though these practices are good, God clearly communicates that He wants ALL of you. He wants each believer to yield his or her body to God as worship to Him. This is the first of a four-part series on Romans 12.

Jesus Corrects the Disciples’ View of Children (Luke 18:15-17)

Jesus Corrects the Disciples’ View of Children (Luke 18:15-17)

Much of the world now sees children as a bother – a distraction from our passions and pursuits.  Even the Church is deeply immersed in this viewpoint. The disciples acted on the basis of this view. Jesus – greatly troubled by this – indicates that this anti-child view is 180 degrees off from what is true. Children are to be allowed and encouraged participate, and all people can only enter the kingdom if they become as little children. Children are not a distraction from the Gospel – they are the very illustration of what is required to embrace the Gospel. This has clear implications regarding the need for salvation and the simplicity of salvation. Have you become as a little child, simply believing the truth of our Sin-bearer, Jesus?

Jesus Calls Us to Real Discipleship – Part 1 (Luke 14:25-35)

Wednesday, January 24th, 2018

In this passage, Jesus shifts beyond responding to the invitation. He points not to one’s position, but to our practice. He speaks not in terms of belief but behavior. He addresses what it takes to truly follow Him – to be a disciple. Jesus reveals three requirements that one must have to truly be living as a disciple. As we begin, we examine what the full meaning of a “disciple” is. We then list these three requirements, and first look at 3 key observations about all three that help us understand what Jesus is saying. Then we look at the first requirement: Hating those closest to us (!).
