Timeline of Truth: Naomi Enters Bethlehem (with Ruth) Greeted but Grieving (Ruth 1:19-22)

Tuesday, October 1st, 2019

Naomi arrives home, to Bethlehem, with Ruth. She is recognized, and her arrival causes quite a commotion. Being called by her name (which means “pleasant” or “lovely”), Naomi bursts out in grief, instructing people to call her Mara (“bitter”) instead, because of the terrible things that have happened to her. Key in Naomi’s response is that she recognizes that God is in control of all circumstances – bad and good. By acknowledging God’s hand in tragedy, she also acknowledges her belief and hope in God to bring her good.

Christmas is much more than a single moment of time. The Old Testament prophesies of Jesus’ birth in Genesis! In this “walk-through” Christmas, we focus on the earthly timeline of events as revealed in the Gospels. As we read the texts of Scripture, several from our congregation do a “walk-through,” representing the various individuals identified in the Biblical account. We begin when the angel appears to Mary, and we end when Jesus is a young man. Get a better picture of the entire account of Jesus’ Christmas coming!
